True adventurers should make the pilgrimage here to enjoy the thriving extreme sports culture - the only thing that’s more dominant here is the beauty of the wilderness itself. For those who like life nice and easy, Queenstown is still a great weekend away with a gorgeous lakeside setting and plenty of good restaurants - especially in combination with a rural lodge. It is harder and harder to find a place where you only have to look up to find empty, soul-stirring views all around you. New Zealand really delivers on this.
If you want to see the Mountain Ranges of the Otago region at their snow-capped best, the best months are June to September.
