The resort has a charming boutique that I really enjoyed browsing through, with plenty of trinkets that let you take a little of this intoxicating island atmosphere home with you. It’s in a very unassuming little hut with stone walls, located in the island’s leafy interior near the scuba room and library.
There are shelves that showcase local shell and stone jewelry, all together in one spot. There are Kenyan KIKOI sarongs for sale, so unmistakably East African in many different patterns. The handmade baskets have really good quality leather trimming and Mnemba Island T-shirts or CDs of African music are great, no brainer memories.
I love the fact that the locally flavoured items aren’t prohibitively priced. The store is open all day, allowing guests to wander in and simply charge items to their room, where your purchases will be waiting for you, all wrapped up…
This curio shop in the heart of town, run by Bashira Jafferji, has a far better class of trinket than most generic souvenir shops. There are genuinely interesting crafts that showcase traditional Zanzibar artistry, from drums to antique rattles and beaded artwork, as well as amazing postcards, original photography, African artbooks and Taarab music.
Apart from the quirky atmosphere and great shopping you can find here, as a bonus… this was the original home of Queen superstar, FREDDIE MERCURY!
If you are interested in really ravishing, artistic black and white photographs of this interesting city the gallery sells amazing prints of the architecture and streetlife of Stonetown, taken by industry professionals like Hans Agterdenbos.
If you want to push yourself even further, the gallery offers PHOTOWALKS with a pro - an outdoor coaching session to help you seize the moment and take more interesting photos yourself. Sheira said…I think Jonathan’s photos are great, but I am sure that he would have loved to do this masterclass if we weren’t just passing through.
