Jonathan and I love the luxury of leaving a dinner at 11pm and still be able to stroll through open shops on a balmy summer evening; Dubrovnik was fun to explore and I liked the character of the pedestrian shopping streets. Amongst the homey crafts, fish and farmers markets (by day) and flower shops you’ll find all sorts of boutiques; these ones caught my eye…
There is a lot of really unique, homemade jewelry here amongst nice pashminas, throws and colourful trinkets - necklaces with oversized, raw Flintstones style beads, chokers with clusters of pearls, coral or shells, and real silver with beautiful stones. The designs are funky and modern but not cheaply done: fun pieces cost 400 Euros.
It’s the kind of quirky collectibles store that draws me in, where the owner is interesting and the stock is distinctive. The shop has stone walls and low beams and is decorated with random objects like an antique bird cage, a vintage dress on a dressmakers dummy and starfish. The owners, Ivona Matica Radulovic, who is also a professor of fine arts, and her husband Robert have a groovy, arty look about them and have put together a really fun store. As a bonus, they are great people to get advice on about the old town!
Apart from any last minute holiday needs like kids sandals and swimwear a girl can actually reach out and do some serious designer shopping amongst these medieval fortresses! Women from around Croatia come here for the most exclusive designer fashion and accessories, from cutting edge niche labels like Lara Bohinc, Diptique and La Petite Salope to the big guns like Rick Owen, Miu Miu, YSL and Stella McCartney. This is an unexpected treat for visitors who may not know some of these under the radar European designers or have these collections at home.
