Unusually for a private island, there is excellent retail here that would make being a castaway a total breeze. There are very few resorts in the world( and I have been to a lot) that can boast this selection of boutiques; you could start off naked and soon have a whole wardrobe ready before Man Friday showed up!
THE MAIN BOUTIQUE carries an incredible variety of international labels as well as showcasing some of Australia’s finest casual and formal. Hugo Boss and Lacoste sit well alongside local womenswear stars Lisa Ho, Fleur wood, Third Millenium, Helen Kaminski, Sydney shoe label Andrea & Joen (known for its sexy buckles and straps) and Napoleon Perdis make up, which is now conquering America.
Boutique buyer, Susan Pendlebury has a keen eye for chic, light resort dressing that can also be dressy for after-five, spanning both young/funky and older/sophisticated. It’s a treasure trove that’s really fun to shop in; a better selection of jewelry and handbags would be the icing on the cake…
For even more relaxed, poolside wear head straight to ISLAND BOUTIQUE for their eclectic array of swimwear labels, from the beads, feathers and animal prints of Tiger Lilly, Jets, and Gottex, to teen beach labels such as Billabong, Element, and Von Zipper. You can buy iconic Summer essentials like Ray Ban and Oakley sunglasses, Brazilian Havaiana thongs, men’s boardshorts and golf gear or pretty beach sandals for women.
Because Hayman is full of tumbling, splashing toddlers, the parents who love them can go nuts shopping in a stand alone boutique for the under 8’s (boys and girls) - offering Seafolly, Billabong, Havianans, Little Darling and pretty adorable ‘bathers’ (as we call swimwear) rashies, flip flops and general casuals.
The Depazzi jewellery shop, which used to sell pearls, diamonds and watches to the flashier guests, has recently been taken over by James Evert and Bruce Tully who are producing beautiful and original pieces made from crocodile, stingray and ostrich leather, also incorporating opals and pearls. The thing I love about these pieces is that, in a veritable sea of unimaginative jewelry stores around the world’s resorts, these pieces for men and women are unusual, artful creations - so unique to Hayman Island that they will always remind you of your experience there.
THE GALLERY is also getting more interesting, switching stock and taking on eye catching, artisanal niche labels like glassware and kaftans by design talent, Colin Heaney.
Hayman also has plenty of everyday shops where you can stock up on photographic supplies, pharmacy needs and freighted-in mags and newspapers. You’ll have no problem getting in a little retail therapy on this island!
