SHEIRA SAID... SPEND LOS CABOS Mexico

In a commercial environment like Cabo San Lucas, of course there will be the overlay of shops that just blatantly sell tourists Corona branded towels, mugs, t-shirts. But walking around we were attracted to the more market style shops, selling beautiful throws and local blankets in bright colours, which we ended up buying.

This is not a destination that’s about names or fabulous shops as such. Simply meandering through the streets, you will find plenty of silverware and delightful Mexican trinkets amongst the surf shops and Havianas. There was a lot of jewelry and silver, jangly bangles in plain silver for US$5 each. Because I’m so small-framed most of the bracelets were too big for me; I felt like I was missing out on the bangle jamboree! But I kept looking in the little shops in the back lanes and bought a bagful in my size for about $50. If you look past the tacky, mass-produced tourist baubles you’ll find fun, market jewelry for resort dressing or gifts.

There are homewares on every corner: hand painted ceramics, beautiful Mexican coloured glass glassware with decorative rims - taken to a designer level. If we were impulse buyers we could have easily walked away with a whole dinner service. There were plenty of gorgeous, crafted pieces in the amazing Mexican, punchy palette that you could cherry pick - and would seem a lot more expensive out of the original tourist context.

On a much smaller scale, the streets bordering the fountain at the heart of San Jose del Cabo are a delight to shop in, due to the quaint yet up-market artistry of the objects there. The quality of the silverware, antiques and handwoven shawls make them great purchases anywhere - and the town is so pretty and old-fashioned that the experience is a lovely contrast to the impersonal, stressful and rushed shopping we have all become so used to in modern malls.
