Shopping is always a joy for me in neighbourhoods packed with niche, local one- off boutiques, and lots of windows to gaze at or draw you inside as you stroll by. Tel Aviv is full of great spots where the footpaths and cafes are brimming over with life, and every street has an interesting shop to see.

SHEINKIN STREET has a colorful, youngish atmosphere, with as much eye candy on each side of the street as in the windowfronts. Confident Tel Aviv 20-something beauties in cut off jeans and graphic arts label tees stroll by, buying corn on the cob from a food stall or draping somewhere with a cigarette. This neighbourhood is considered the “Soho” of Tel Aviv, jam packed with the trendiest funky, emerging FASHION LABELS, SHOE stores, RECORD SHOPS, TATTOO PARLOURS, high end toiletries stores, JEWELRY and increasingly, designer stores between ALENBY and KING GEORGE.

I get a huge jolt of energy everytime I shop here and always find something fun or special, from dangly ethnic earrings to candles in amazing, whisper-soft pastel colours. In a global city, I always prize the street with the small shops!

Sometimes you can find the range of a small street in one fabulous shop, when the owner has a strong vision and knows how to put all the stock together brilliantly. If you wanted designer, Tali Sebbag’s glamourous life, all you would have to do is pick up all the items on sale at her showroom - her showcase for all the parfumerie, one off fashion pieces, soft furnishings and textiles and silverware that she has found on her travels, combing the world for objets for “inspirational living.”l

The intact, ancient streets of Jaffa are still very much alive and a fun place to shop. There are plenty of valuable old finds and furniture in the ANTIQUE DISTRICT, but the real chance to bargain hunt for treasures is at the open and covered FLEA MARKET - full of secondhand clothes, old china, Persian tiles, copper pots, jewelry, decorative objects and collectible bric a brac or whatever the luck of the draw is that week. Jonathan and I are so into the surprises and old-fashioned ritual of marketplaces as an escape from homogenous chain store culture that we always recommend them to travelers for local texture. Breaking through the language barriers and haggling with your hands here is all part of the fun.

This is a lovely store where you can pick up this label’s signature 100% wrinkled cotton scarves and very crisp bed linen and blankets in chic, modernist black, white and dove grays. From the homewares, to the handmade notepaper, everything exemplifies purist, urban chic; if you live in a giant loft in downtown New York filled with modern art, you’ll want everything here. Sharon Brushner is one of Israel’s hottest design talents, with the sleek pixie haircut and ruthlessly simply, unfussy aesthetic that makes her the perfect poster girl for her own look.

These charming streets have always attracted authors, painters and other creatives, and over the last few decades architects and yuppies have started restoring the crumbling old houses, piazzas and gardens that make it so special…

Ambling through the many ART GALLERIES is not only a great activity in itself, as visitors can immediately get a glimpse of the visual arts scene of Tel Aviv, but a great chance to go shopping and pick up affordable artwork from aspiring, upcoming artists that take your fancy, bringing something of Tel Aviv home with you. We have many friends who have fallen in love and invested in a big, splashy figurative or abstract oil painting that now hangs in pride of place on walls in the US or in a harbourside house in Sydney. There is plenty of genuine art talent in Tel Aviv that transcends the usual touristic gallery scene.

From SALOME STREET to CARMEL MARKET there are so many little shops in these leafy, stone streets dotted with café umbrellas, selling beautifully cut, mini-adult CHILDREN’S CLOTHES and handmade CERAMICS. Artists like SAMY D on SHABAZI ST create practical objects like cups that are so beautifully sculptural that you’ll want to display them on shelves, not put them away! SHLUSH SHLOSHIM is a gorgeous alleyway store that sells great earthy pottery and ceramics that come straight from the hands of artisans working in collectives around rural Israel.

I love this totally unique label that you can easily tell was designed by a former dancer due to the fluidity of pieces. These minimalistic pieces also have a certain Japanese influenced design flair, with simple smock dresses in graceful, fashion-forward cuts, coats with amazing detailing like sculptural cowl necks, 80s jumpsuits that would look amazing on young girls in any cool city right now, feather light separates and amazing, dance-inspired leggings

This boutique is so inviting because of the 19th century opulence in the décor that goes with the romantic name - but the backdrop is a wonderful foil for the very cutting edge, imported fashion and accessories labels that the store curates. Light viscose tops with batwing sleeves; stiff brocade skirts that are slashed asymmetrically, light jersey tops and flowing pants anchored by an oversized wide leather hipster belt and combat boots; leather pouches that wind around hips. These looks have walked straight off the high fashion pages; you are bound to find a sharp piece here that will update your wardrobe basics.

  • This young designer Efrat is hugely popular with the bright young things of Tel Aviv and her store stocks fun, summery casual dresses and plenty of separates. It’s great if you want to top up your travel wardrobe with a fun new blouse or support the next generation of young design talent.

There are a lot of prestige shops in the famous Hilton lobby – and I fell in love with a $165,000 diamond necklace in this wonderful fine jewelry store that haunted me everytime I left the hotel!

I find a lot of jewelry of this quality can be quite stuffy or conventional in design – but the H. Stern collections are gorgeous, with refined, delicate design that has a little whimsy, making it more modern. Chains with droplets of diamonds and silver appear like dew on a spiderweb, the gold is sandblasted to create a matte finish, and designers like DIANE VON FURSTENBURG have come on board. I love her collection of big, chunky rings and dangling chain hoops earrings - it’s powerful, career women jewelry. This is a lovely store with plenty of gorgeous baubles and nice, unobtrusive service.

If you want to relax you shopped out feet, pop over to the BASEL SQUARE area and treat yourself to a fabulous MANI/PEDI or a spa treatment. This is where all the Tel Aviv brides come for their extra pampering, like MUD MASK MANICURES or “no holds barred” NIRVANA foot massages. You’ll feel so dreamy coming out that you won’t get much shopping done afterwards though, so book in for the end of the day!
